35th Anniversary

FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL

From the beginning, Carolina West Wireless built our network from the ground up. The first towers served just a handful of counties. Today, we deliver high-speed nationwide connectivity, while continuing to invest in faster speeds and stronger coverage for our communities.

In the early years of connectivity, people vividly remember the freedom of making their first wireless call from outside the home. You could suddenly call whomever you wanted while on the go. Customers no longer had to rely on a landline to reach family close to home or friends abroad. When Carolina West Wireless switched on those first towers, you gained the connectivity to talk from your car or job site.

When technology shifted from analog to digital, Carolina West Wireless was ready. As 4G became the standard, we entered a partnership to bring a high-speed nationwide network to local customers, while providing the same reliable coverage for travelers passing through our network area. In recent years, Carolina West Wireless rolled out 5G, bringing next-generation connectivity to a rural market.

That commitment to modern technology has never come at the expense of local care.

For thirty-five years, Carolina West Wireless has built more than just a network; we’ve built a family. While technology is what we provide, it’s the people—our employees and our customers—who are the true heart of our company. Carolina West Wireless has always been made up of good people who care deeply about their neighbors. Many employees have spent their entire careers there, and it shows in the way they serve customers.

For many people in western North Carolina, their first job, first cellphone, and first lasting friendships began with Carolina West Wireless. Walk into a store today, and you will still see familiar faces who have helped families stay connected throughout the decades. The same employee who once installed a bag phone might now be helping that customer’s grandchild activate their first smartphone.

Customers notice. One longtime subscriber summed it up perfectly.

PROGRESS WITH A PURPOSE

For 35 years, the journey from bag phones to iPhones has been about more than devices for Carolina West Wireless. It has been about improving how people live, work, and learn in rural North Carolina. Carolina West Wireless believes true connection is measured by the value we bring to our customers and the positive impact we have on our communities. It’s about ensuring customers get reliable service that fits their life and investing back into the Western North Carolina towns and people.

For more than three and a half decades, Carolina West Wireless has delivered more than wireless service. It has delivered lasting value. That promise is reflected in a reliable network customers can count on and the personal, hometown service that makes every connection stronger. It’s a commitment to showing up, standing behind its customers, and keeping communities connected, today and into the future.

FROM BAGS PHONES TO iPHONES

Thirty-five years ago, a phone call still meant driving into town, and family photos lived in albums rather than on screens. In that era, connection was measured in handshakes, not video-call quality. In the mountains of western North Carolina, connection wasn’t guaranteed. Until one day, two local telephone companies decided to change that.

It all started with a promise to bring wireless service to people who would have gone without it otherwise. SkyLine SkyBest and Surry Communications joined forces in 1991 to establish Carolina West Wireless. Their goal was simple: provide a reliable connection to mountain communities that had been overlooked. That decision built more than towers. It built trust. It built careers. And it built a local company that still puts people before profit.
