Wilkesboro, NC - Carolina West Wireless, the premier wireless carrier in western North Carolina, successfully participated in the recent Federal Communication Commission (FCC) incentive spectrum auction and was awarded additional spectrum holdings. As a result of an investment of approximately $10.2 million, Carolina West Wireless secured additional spectrum in 32 counties in Western North Carolina and Northeastern Tennessee spanning a population of over 2.2 million people.

“Our successful participation in the FCC spectrum auction illustrates our commitment to continuing to provide the best wireless network in western North Carolina. This additional low-band spectrum acquisition will enable Carolina West Wireless to strengthen and expand existing LTE coverage and increase capacity to meet the growing business and consumer demand for more mobile data – as well as creating the network foundation for the next generation of wireless services,” said Slayton Stewart, CEO of Carolina West Wireless.

On March 29, 2016, the FCC commenced the first-ever “incentive auction” designed to repurpose spectrum for new uses. Authorized by Congress in 2012, the auction used market forces to align the use of broadcast airwaves with 21st century consumer demands for video and broadband services.

The auction preserves a robust broadcast TV industry while enabling stations to generate additional revenues that they can invest into programming and services to the communities they serve. By making valuable “low-band” airwaves available for wireless broadband, the incentive auction will benefit consumers by easing congestion on wireless networks, laying the groundwork for “fifth generation” (5G) wireless services and applications, and spurring job creation and economic growth, according to the FCC.

New Area Code Overlay for North Carolina
November 03, 2015

November 03, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

todde@carolinawest.com
336.973.5500

10 Digit Dialing to Become a Requirement For Landline and All Wireless Carrier Local Calling. In addition, the Carolina West Wireless service area counties of Allegheny, Ashe, Surry and Wilkes will be included as part of the new Area Code Overlay in the North Carolina Piedmont Area.

To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the North Carolina Utilities Commission ordered a 743 Area Code Overlay for the area currently assigned to the 336 area code. The new 743 area code will be “overlaid” over the same geographical area as the current 336 area code so that two area codes, 743 and 336, will be assigned to the area, generally covering the Piedmont, including the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Kernersville, Burlington, North Wilkesboro, Roxboro and Asheboro.

New Dialing Pattern

Residential and business customers assigned to the existing 336 area code should prepare for the introduction of the new 743 area code. Use of an overlay area code requires that customers must dial 10 digits (area code + 7-digit local telephone number) to complete local calls within their area code calling area. To help customers prepare for this change and ensure a smooth transition, beginning October 24, 2015, customers may begin placing local calls by using the new 10-digit local dialing pattern. Customers may continue to use 7-digit local dialing until April 22, 2016, when that option will come to an end.

Effective on April 23, 2016, all local calls must be placed using the 10-digit telephone number (336 or 743 plus the 7-digit local telephone number). Beginning May 23, 2016, customers in the 336 area code region requesting new service, adding an additional line, or in some cases moving their service, may be assigned new numbers using either 336 or the new 743 area code.

Facts About the New Area Code

The most important facts that consumers and businesses need to know about the upcoming 743 area code overlay are:
•Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change, but may if you move your service
•You will need to dial area code + 7-digit local telephone number for all local calls.
•For billing purposes, what is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.
•You will continue to dial 1+ area code + 7-digit local telephone number for all long distance calls.
•The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
•You can still dial just three digits to reach 911.
•If 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 are currently available in your community, you will still dial these codes with just three digits.

Planning for the New Area Code

Customers should identify their telephone number as a ten digit number (area code + 7-digit local telephone number), and include the area code when giving the number to their friends, family, business associates and business customers, etc.

Customers should ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, applications, software, or other types of equipment recognize the new 743 area code as a valid area code. Some examples are life safety systems, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, alarm and security systems, gates, speed dialers, mobile phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services, and similar functions. Be sure to check your business stationery, website, advertising materials, personal checks, and your personal or pet ID tags to ensure the area code is included in your telephone number. Remember that all local calls must be programmed using 10-digits and you need to add “1” for all long distance calls. “At Carolina West Wireless, we truly appreciate our customer’s support and strongly believe in giving back to our local communities where we live and serve,” says Jude O’Sullivan, Vice President of Operations at Carolina West Wireless. “This is emphasized by our Communications for Education Program where we take 3% of the revenue we receive from the monthly service fees and donate it directly to the school of our customer’s choice.”  Customers are not required to have any affiliation with the school.

Schools who take the most advantage of this program such as Ashe County High School, West Wilkes High School, and Alexander Central High School are receiving thousands of dollars from Carolina West every year to use as they wish. When Becky Gresham, West Wilkes High School’s financial coordinator was asked what impact the funding from Carolina West had on her school she stated, “The check we receive from Carolina West goes straight to our classrooms. This funding allows our teachers the ability to purchase all the supplies they need, supplies that might otherwise have been foregone without this additional money.”

Since the inception of the program CWW has given over five hundred thousand dollar to schools in their surrounding counties. For more information about the Communications for Education program by Carolina West Wireless ask your local school or contact their Customer Care Center at 800-235-5007.

WILKESBORO, NC  and DENVER, June 3, 2019 – Subsentio today announced it has honored Carolina West Wireless by presenting the mobile service provider with the Subsentio “Safe Harbor Award” for their role in ensuring the safe rescue of two teenage youths who lost their way while hiking in Stone Mountain State Park in March 2019.

“We are very proud to accept this award from Subsentio,” said Jude O’Sullivan, Chief Customer Officer of Carolina West Wireless. “Thanks to the remarkable technologies we host, a very worrisome incident for the boys and their families was brought to a safe and happy conclusion.”

“This event can help boost awareness of how systems designed to apprehend criminals and terrorists are equally important to the work of first responders,” said Steve Bock, President and CEO of Subsentio. “Not for the first time, advanced technology saved lives.”

The rescue operation unfolded on the afternoon of March 3, 2019. While hiking on the state park’s “Mountains to the Sea Trail,” the two boys went off trail, lost their way and dialed 911 on their smartphone for help. Carolina West went into action, deploying GPS location and radio frequency (RF) triangulation to determine the youth’s location, precisely position rescuers in a 14,351-acre state park, and find the teens before night fell and temperatures plunged.
